[ID 138] BOVINE RABIES: CASE REPORT

INTRODUCTION: Rabies is an infectious anthropozoonosis of viral origin, transmitted by inoculation of the virus present in saliva and secretions of the infected animal. It presents a high degree of lethality, reflecting in public health.
OBJECTIVE: To report the occurrence of a case of bovine rabies, in the city of Patrocínio-MG.
METHODS: The case occurred on 24/02/2021, in a male nellore cattle, eighteen months old, from a herd of cutting fitness. In on-site observations of the veterinarian, material from the central nervous system was collected for laboratory analysis of the virological diagnosis.
RESULTS: The referred animal presented a paralytic condition for four to six days. The samples were collected and sent by the Laboratory of Animal Health of the IMA, presenting the positive result for rabies through the IFD test and later confirmation by the inoculation test in mice. The responsible veterinarian was notified of the result, contacting the Health Surveillance sector of the aforementioned municipality, for the necessary measures. This occurrence is a reflection of a failure in the sanitary management of the herd, since the animal had never been vaccinated. The focus of the disease was established and all measures were taken by the Animal Health Defense Service, such as the control of vampire bats, focused on the species Desmodus rotundus, as governed by the PNCRH of MAPA, in the ownership of the occurrence.
CONCLUSION: In bovine herds, the positive result of rabies has resulted in great socioeconomic losses to producers, breeders and the food industry.
