Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Food and nutrition are fundamental aspects for the preservation of life, essentially when it comes to maintaining the life of a premature, born before completing 37 weeks. In the context of neonatal units, several benefits are observed in relation to breastfeeding in premature infants, however, there is great complexity in the process of establishing and maintaining breastfeeding.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the weight gain of preterm newborns related to the type of milk.

METHODS: This is a descriptive, comparative, transversal and quantitative study, with 28 premature babies of both sexes, through the analysis of medical records, twice a week, collecting weight, type of milk offered and route of administration.

RESULTS: Mean gestational age was 33 weeks (27 - 37), 10.8% (n = 3) received breast milk, 75.0% (n = 21) industrialized formula, 7.1% (n = 2) milk maternal formula + industrialized formula and 7.1% (n = 2) were fasting. When evaluating the comparison of weight gain in relation to the type of milk, it was observed that there was a significant difference (p<0.05) in the average weight gain, being greater in premature babies who received breast milk than in those with industrialized formula.

CONCLUSION: The study shows that breast milk had a better result in relation to the average weight gain of the premature baby, which demonstrates that breast milk does have benefits in the development of the premature infant.
