INTRODUCTION: Coronavirus (COVID-19) has spread worldwide and is considered a pandemic due to its high morbidity and mortality. As a result of the pandemic, the government decreed a quarantine in order to minimize the viral spread. Such characteristics caused guardians and animals to remain confined in the households. The change in the animals' routine can impact their behavior and well-being, enabling the emergence of behavioral changes due to their confinement.
OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the knowledge and relationship of pet guardians during quarantine by COVID-19.
METHODS: The work consists of the application of an online questionnaire, formulated by Google Forms, including multiple choice questions about the way to supply food to the animals, practice of physical activities, behavioral changes and knowledge of tutors about COVID-19 in companion animals. The same was sent to the participants through digital media. The results obtained were tabulated, obtaining the percentage values, and the chi-square test was performed at 5% significance for the response options.
RESULTS: 128 people participated in the work, however, 2 were removed for not having animals. For all analyzed variables, statistical differences were observed. It was observed that during the quarantine, there was no change in the way in which food was supplied to the animals, with new distracting objects being added, maintenance of physical activities and body weight being added. Regarding knowledge of COVID-19 in animals, the guardians claim that animals cannot transmit or become infected, showing knowledge about the coronavirus that belongs to animals.
CONCLUSION: The companion animals did not show changes in body weight and behavior during the pandemic, and the guardians do not have knowledge about COVID-19 in animals, but understand the animals' coronavirus.
